Brainspotting WHAT IS BRAINSPOTTING? Brainspotting, is a brain-body based psychotherapy, where the therapist gets direct access into a person’s nervous system (where they are holding their problems and their traumas). Through the visual field, we monitor and make use of what a person is feeling in his body. The body is a wonderful way to access the deepest parts of the brain. Essentially, we access people’s brain and nervous system through the eyes and with awareness of sensation throughout the body where people feel joy and distress. Though Brainspotting is brain and body based, it is unique because it’s based on the human relationship between therapist and client. Brainspotting is truly a relational therapy because the core of healing happens when two people sit down together. A trained Brainspotting therapist knows that the most important thing in therapy is maintaining an attuned presence with the client. The client brings the issue that the therapist and client will work on together. The therapist has the expertise and the presence to help his client find his own personal path toward healing. Brainspotting works by setting a dual frame for the client: A frame for the relationship and a frame in the brain-body, which is found in the client’s eye position. Inside of that brain body frame the therapist guides a process to tap into and access the person’s capacity to heal himself. The healing process itself is actually wired into our brain. Through the brain body connection we discover what the problem is, what the resolution is and how to resolves the problem from the inside out (from the body/mind out). Brainspotting is really gentle and natural and follows the client’s natural capacity to heal himself HOW CAN BRAINSPOTTING BE USED? Brainspotting is designed to be effective on a variety of issues or challenges. It can be used to heal most emotional situations, anxiety, depression, relationship problems, or work problems. It is also used for physical problems, physical pain, tension, and recovery from accidents. It can also be used for enhancing creativity, expanding performance abilities and overcoming creative blocks. Brainspotting can help us heal or improve any aspect of the human experience. WHAT MAKES BRAINSPOTTING DIFFERENT FROM OTHER THERAPIES? Though Brainspotting is gentle and follows the body’s natural capacity to heal itself, it’s direct and it works to heal quickly. Unlike talk therapy Brainspotting takes less time and tends to be more focused. Brainspotting is like a subtle focused light that goes directly from the eyes into the brain, finds where the trauma is, holds it in place, and helps the brain heal itself. Some issues can actually be healed remarkably fast in two to three sessions. Others take longer needing 5, 10, or 20 sessions. Even if it takes longer, the amount of time taken is a fraction of that taken with other therapies and the healing continues beyond the time frame of the therapy session.
